Core iPad Apps

Using iPads in your classroom provides a unique learning opportunity for students to demonstrate their thinking and their learning digitally while curating that content in easily shareable ways. Rather than focus on passive technological consumption, many of the iPad apps that we recommend and pre-install here in SD61 place an emphasis on student-centered creation. Below is a list of apps included as our Core Set and some other options that have been vetted by teachers in their classrooms. For information on requesting an app installation to a district iPad, please click here.

Kindergarten Focus:

These apps are especially useful as iPad entry points for younger students who are just getting started with iPads. We've also included a link to the Elementary School Library website, which appears on every iPad and hosts a wealth of links and resources that are geared towards students in Greater Victoria.

A note about iMovie

iMovie, Apple’s own entry-level video editing suite, was originally included as a part of our Core iPad app set as it was free to install and served as a powerful way for teachers and students to quickly film, edit and assemble a video. Due to the limited space available on our district iPads, we have decided to remove iMovie from the core group of pre-installed apps on the iPads. The app is still available for installation by request, but in order to reduce the impact of its nearly 3GB memory footprint, it no longer appears on iPads by default.
